Hub Island, off the Coast of Mount Desert Maine

I spent my 40th birthday all alone on an island with SP. It was divine perfection! We had a sunset dinner for two on the rocky cliffs.
We had a lovely loaf of sour dough bread from a bakery in Bar Harbor. Fresh goat cheese from Cove Seal Farm. A smoked cheddar from VT. Salami and Prosciutto as a protein. My favorite part was that I found Marsh Pickle on the island. It's a salty edible seaweed found in the upper intertidal zone - as it made the most excellent condiment! Crisp and crunchy, since it spends most of it's time out of the water, it lacks that musky marine taste in other seaweeds.

Thornhedge Inn, Bar Harbor Maine

While I didn't take any pictures of the Breakfasts we had at this lovely Victorian B&B, i did take photos of the antique button collections on display!

Finn's Pub in Ellsworth Maine

My awesome friend Val is the bar tender there. It was a great meal!
Three unique deviled eggs was my appetizer while SP had the Scotch Eggs.
A sampler of a yummy stout I cant remember the name of that had a high alcohol content.
The Plowman's plate I just couldn't resist and SP had the crispy crab wrap.

Flies, Southampton NY

This beach has been named Flies by the surfers. No explanation needed if you have ever been there. Green flies bite when there is no wind or only a wind from the north breeze off Shinnecock Bay.
Great beach day with my sister and her friends who are all in the restaurant industry.
Beach grill, grilled pizzas, hot dogs, mozzerella tomato basil stackers, Shrimp au gratin, Shumai (Thai chicken dumplings), Grinders, Kielbasa deviled eggs, and lots of fun merryment and excellent surf.
Yum!

Why I started THIS blog

I am a foodie. I didn't realize I was a foodie for a while. I recently read a blog post titled something akin to "How you know you are a foodie" and one particular aspect struck a chord within me. I take pictures of my food ALL.THE.TIME.

Now when these pictures are taken at home, they fit perfectly into my other blogs Merry Meeting Menus or Sustainable Maine . But when they are not taken at home, I find I am not sure what to do with them. I have noticed over time that my computer has filled with these photos. I never ended up putting them on my blog because they didn't quite fit. These pictures were different and did not belong. (thank you Ani DiFranco).

I have a lot of these pictures even though we seldom go out. In all seriousness, we are a one income mortgage poor family of five and really can't afford to! So eating at a restaurant is one of those few and far between moments and even rarer times when we get all fancy and throw down some dough for a fantastic meal. This usually only happens when we get out tax return! However, this did happen last week for my (gasp) 40th birthday and that is when I got the idea to start a new blog.

So welcome to When Fern (me) and Frond (my loving husband SP) Eat Out. It will be a shout out to restaurants and full of blurry iPhone pictures (just for you Dawn) until I can get a better camera.
